Thoughts on a Passat

My stepdad sold his diesel touareg not that long ago, and in it’s place came this:

Kinja'd!!!

A 2016 VW passat SE 1.8 with the tech pack. After owning it for about 6 months, i finally got to drive it. Here are my conclusions:

-why would anyone NOT tune one of these? Ours has an APR stage 1 tune, and it drives better than my stepbrothers stock mk7 GTI! it accelerates very quickly for what it is.

-quiet. You can hear your hairs growing in it. Sure, it’s not an S-class, but very refined

-needs better suspension. It’s too softly sprung to be sporty. It is damn comfy though.

Overall, it’s a great car. Ours has some 240hp and 290ft-lbs on tap, so it REALLY scoots nicely!

-why would anyone NOT tune one of these?

Because some people give 0 shits about cars.

The Passat is a terrible car. I never want to see my 2015 Passat TSI Limited ever again. I hate it.

True, but it returns better mpg’s and performance

To each their own, but isn’t 240hp plenty sufficient for an auto mid-size sedan?

It doesn’t matter, you think those people are going to look into tunes and be like oh I can get more power and better mpg? No they’re not, because they don’t give a shit. Not everyone is passionate about cars, just like not everyone is passionate about phones, there are some people out there that are though. Does my phone work, that’s all I care about. Oh you could get better battery life and a faster process speed if you tune your phone. You know what, I wouldn’t know if that’s true or not because I give 0 shits.

The better question, is why does your stepbrother’s GTI not have an APR tune?

At the expense of emissions compliance, unless it’s certified buy CARB.

Let’s be real, does anyone care about emissions? Because my family doesn’t...

And yes it does, since it still has a 100% stock exhaust

It doesn’t yet because he’s saving up to do IS38, downpipe, wheels, tires brakes and a tune at once

Oh it is. That’s what it makes now. It made 170 stock

And not just that they don’t care but some people don’t know. I have a friend with a GTI who was telling me about how he was in the waiting room of an oil change or tire place or something and a teenager started asking about his GTI and was like, “what kind of tune do you have?” And my friends response(and I credit him because he is normally kind of a bullshitter) apparently was “what’s a tune?”

...

2 weeks later he had a stage 1 reflash.

I’m almost certain that NOx emissions are quite a bit higher than stock, as well as the particulate emissions.

The thing is, the computer is an emissions control system, and modifying it is a violation of federal law, even if it’s one that states may not be able to detect.

We’re not talking about a diesel here, I’m sure the “tune” can’t deactivate the platinum and other rare metals in the catalytic converter from reducing the NOx. At worst the tune is reducing the longevity of the powertrain

It can absolutely make the engine run leaner at light loads, though, which means both higher NOx production (more oxygen available to react with the nitrogen), and reduced catalytic converter effectiveness.

If the government mandated pre and post catalytic converter NOx sensors I wouldn’t be surprised if some auto manufacturers were out of compliance with stock engine management

You do realize that N0x is fairly harmless, right? Its just the nazis at the EPA who are making it out to seem like it’s the new arsenic or something.

In reality, even 1000 combustion engines will really not even put a dent in the global production of Nox.

As for it being illegal? I’m sorry sir, but you’re smoking some good shit if you think tuning a car will do anything illegal. By that logic, using non OEM parts on a car is a federal offense as well
